100% wrong about seafood

Using the language features, hyperbole and alliteration, the text, You’re 100% wrong about… seafood, helps the readers understand the writers attitude towards seafood and why he is so repulsed by it.

Throughout the text, the language feature hyperbole, to help us understand the writer’s utter disgust towards seafood. A hyperbole is used when the writer wants to exaggerate the effects a certain thing has on them or something else, in this case, the hatred of seafood. ” much of it jammed with fishy critters.” Jammed is an exaggeration or hyperbole. The sea is not literally jammed with fish in the waters but this is what the author says to get their point across and to catch the reader attention. By using this language feature we learn their attitude towards seafood as the word jammed has a very negative connotation. This makes you think of being tightly squeezed amongst in others making you feel closed in. By exaggerating and using hyperbole the author has targeted the readers own senses, compelling us to agree with him more and show us how much he truly hates seafood. Another example in the text is when said: “recoil like Dracula drenched in holy water and gasping for breath.” This sentence is the whole hyperbole, rather than focusing on a particular word. This hyperbole allows the reader to create an image in their mind and focus on the image of the writer being absolutely disgusted when coming in contact with the fish or seafood. we are able to get a sense of dread and horror that the author must feel when it comes to seafood as they have exaggerated words in order to describe their attitude.

Not only has the author used hyperbole throughout the text to discuss their distaste in seafood, they also used alliteration to further emphasis their disgust for seafood. Alliteration is putting two or more words with the same starting consonant side-by-side to emphasis the point you’re trying to prove. This is done numerous times in the text to show us the authors disgust. the author comments the reason for their hatred set on the fact that they cant ” stomach seafood.” by using alliteration we are able to see how much the author despise it. it puts a strong accent of the words so that the readers pay attention to their point. there is also alliteration in the sentence ” sneaky salmon.” this pulls the reader’s attention to the type of fish that the wife was caught eating and how his wife still eats it when he’s not there. By saying she eats it when he’s not there and emphasising this shows us that his family knows how much he hates it.

Intro

Ambition. A strong drive that pushes you to accomplish a desire or goal. The need to overcome obstacles and challenges and put strategies in place to grow your successes. In order to act on our ambitions, we must learn to prioritize what we love and can sometimes forget the means in which must be taken to rise above the normal. To achieve our ambitions, our integrity and ethics are put on the line. Purity or success? Virtues or greed? The idea of ambition has made appearances for years. Macbeth, the labyrinth, Ozymandias and Gattaca teach ideas, the effects ambition can have on the human soul. Macbeth, a play written by Shakespeare in 1606, shows the damaging consequences of having to much ambition. Macbeth teaches the lesson that humans will never be content with what they have, which leads to hurting the closest people around them. The labyrinth, a film directed by Jim Henson, shows the change in ambition as soon as the thing you love is taken away. Forgetting to remember that everything that they once achieved will one day be lost on them, Ozymandias written by Percy Shelly showcases the idea of power that has now been consigned to oblivion. And lastly Gattaca, a film that shows how positive ambition can be.

Shakespeare has Macbeth be a victim of greed and power, his deteriorating state of mind caused by a grand ambition. As Macbeth’s ambition slowly grows larger as does his insanity and irrationality. He slowly becomes more selfish and narcissistic, only doing things that benefit him. This causes him to make rash decisions under pressure such as the murder of King Duncan. Before proceeding with the murder Lady Macbeth advises her husband to “look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under it.” By this, she means that he should appear to be innocent to disguise his devious and murderous plans. Not only is he being pushed by his own drive, but we also learn that Lady Macbeth is a powerful force behind his actions. She’s ambitious. she plans to share the throne and its wealth once Macbeth has killed the only thing stopping them. Hide underneath an innocent facade but at any point in time, he should be ready to strike. The serpent symbolises death and evil. In the Christian bible, Satan (in the appearance of a serpent) prompts the downfall of eve by tricking her into breaking Gods authority and eating the forbidden fruit. Hence the idea of serpents representing temptation, the devil, and deceit.

This is exactly what Jareth, played by David Bowie, conveys in the movie The labyrinth. The serpents’ actually shown to us near the beginning of the movie, when Sarah and has her brother taken away. Jareth presents her with a wish, a wish to grant anything she could ever dream of. This wish is presented to her in the form of a glowing orb. however, Sarah kindly declines as the only she wants now is her brother ‘I can’t, it’s not that I don’t appreciate what your doing for me but I want my brother back, he must be so scared.’ After her refusal, Jareth turns the orb into a snake yelling ‘don’t defy me’ before throwing her opportunity to receive anything she desired around her neck. In order to give some context, we must know that at the beginning of the film it was seen that the only thing Sarah wanted was to have her baby brother taken away, but as soon as her wish is fulfilled she immediately regrets it and there is a shift in her ambitions. She must now go through the labyrinth to find her baby brother. Her main motivation to go through the Labyrinth is the never felt before feeling of caring for a baby more than herself, an early experience of motherhood. the theme of the whole movie is about growing up and the struggles one has as they learn about the hardships faced with adulthood. Sarah innocently waltz’s her childhood into the arms of a monster, a monster that slowly falls in love with her. these experiences will have great impacts on her as she grows up.

Vincent’s childhood also affected him as he grew up and matured. Gattaca, a film directed by Andrew Niccol, tells the story of a young boy, his whole path carved out by the things that happened in his childhood. Vincent was born as a ‘godchild.’ This meant that there was no interfering from scientists when his parents decided to have the child. Most of the other newborn babies had been genetically chosen in order for the parents to receive the best child possible. This clearly affected society as we hear him say “They used to say that a child conceived in love has a greater chance of happiness. They don’t say that anymore.” Vincent’s brother Anton was a genetically chosen baby so when both were pitted against each other growing up, Anton had the advantage and would win. This taught Vincent that he would have to work for want he wanted to achieve, to reach space. Vincent strives to succeed no matter how disadvantaged he is, his ambitions drive his every move, affecting the choices he makes, however, these ambitions prove to be beneficial for him as at the end of the movie he reaches the stars. “Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I’m not leaving… maybe I’m going home.”

Being connected by a serpent, Sarah from the movie Labyrinth is promised everything she could ever desire in exchange for her brother. when declining her wishes are turned into a snake suffa

Ozymandias

Percy Bysshe Shelly’s poem, Ozymandias, shows no matter the power your ambitions may have and how it affects the present, it’ll all come to an end, where your legacy no longer lives and your dust is the only thing that remains. Ozymandias describes himself as a “king of kings” demonstrating the power he must have over his people and how even the other kings are feeding his ego. Describing himself as a god-like human shows his strong desire to be at the apex of the human system and the drive he must have to push further than all human life and be considered a supreme being.

Ozymandias is portrayed as a cruel, mean and head-strong man. He cares more for the power he could accumulate than the people it’ll take to get there. The sculptor that was crafting his statue must have known this as when his face was created it had a” wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command.” Percy used alliteration to get his point across on this particular piece of text. Using a sharp consonant, Percy created a harsh atmosphere.

Percy Bysshe Shellys first wife was found dead in 1816, two years before Ozymandias was released. Perhaps the reason for themes eternal nothingness in his poem could be related to the death of his wife. Percy may have had an epiphany that no matter what you do while you are alive everything leads to the end and everything you dreamed for, the ambitions that kept pushing you forward will no longer be remembered.

My own sonnet

prickling her skin is a whiplash of wind
her cry of euphoria is cold draughs
guilt pushing her down until shes been pinned
tangled hair is captured in photographs

the gentle rain intertwined with her tears
the golden light falls upon her soft skin
no more has she cried the screams that she hears
no more she wallows, for fear of her sin

caressing her fingers upon her death
on the broken staircase she sits pretty
her shrieks in the dark, just a waste of breath
she can’t look back, plunging into pity

never-mind the darkness, she cannot see
the pain the she carries has been set free

Gattaca ambition

level of status and wealth. when we watch them clean they are seen cleaning underneath the escalator

Gattaca, a film directed by Andrew Niccol, expresses the idea of ambition through symbolism. Symbolism is used to represent an idea through motifs and has an object suggest more than its literal meaning. Using an escalator, the director shows the constant upwards progression that Vincent strives for and his aspirations to get into Gattaca. The escalator constantly travels towards the sky, the one place that Vincent longs to be, more than anyplace else. It never departs down. This could mean that once you’ve moved up, that’s where you’ll stay as your genes will never change and you’ll always be who u are made to be. Having Vincent start as a cleaner, cleaning underneath the escalator to then being able to access it and use it shows his rise in status. Vincent was born as a godchild, a chance at life was never really an option for him. When Vincent arrives as a janitor he is placed right in front of the escalator looking up. everything that he could ever want is at the top of the stairs, yet he can’t achieve what he desires. when he finds himself in position to finally climb, this shows the start of his journey, a new beginning, a chance to finally go to space. Some could say that the escalator shows the stairs to heaven. It the only place he wants be the thing that he has sacrificed everything for, leading right up to the sky and his success.

Modernism

Modernism was essentially based on a futuristic version of human life and society and a belief in progress, or moving forward.

Gattaca, a film directed by Andrew Niccol, showcases a futurist society where characters live governed by the ideals of a genetically perfect human being. The appearance of the film features a large variety of modernist architecture displaying sharp, flat and clean-cut shapes

Practice Paragraph

The morning after King Duncan’s murder, Lennox tells Macbeth how chaotic the night has been. When Shakespeare has Lennox say, “the night has been unruly. Where we lay, Our chimneys were blown down … Some say the Earth Was feverous and did shake” he is using pathetic fallacy to get his point across to the audience. Shakespeare is giving human emotions to intimate objects, or in this case the weather. This represents the effects Duncans murder has on the world around them and how that has now thrown the natural order into chaos. During the time period this play was written it was said that God appointed the kings to represent their country. This recent event has troubled the earth and the higher forces in power. By causing a disorder on earth after the ‘appointed’ king has been killed signifies that Macbeth was never meant to be king and has taken the title without being chosen in a malicious and reckless way. After the murder, it also is seen that the natural world has been changed after Ross says “By th’ clock ’tis day, And yet dark night strangles the travelling lamp. Is ’t night’s predominance or the day’s shame That darkness does the face of Earth entomb.” This once again emphasises the unnatural killing of Duncan. The day stays dark and there is no light to be seen. The sun which would light up the morning has been smothered by darkness, signifying that not even the brightest star can shine after such an awful deed has been committed. Shakespeare is showing the audience the effects of such a brutal act using pathetic fallacy.
